Development management in Manchester
Client-side development management for Manchester, drawing on Josh McGuinness MRICS’s experience of heritage restoration and student accommodation at The Chapel.
The Chapel is a Manchester example of adapting a difficult existing asset to a new use. The Grade II listed chapel had been on the buildings-at-risk register before its restoration into 87 student beds, opposite the University of Manchester. Josh’s experience on this scheme was gained through Empiric Student Property.
For an owner considering a Manchester conversion or new development, the early questions are commercial as well as technical. What use suits the building and location? What investigations are needed? How should heritage advice, the planning strategy and the construction programme inform the appraisal?
JMGL can help assemble that picture, coordinating the professional team and maintaining a client-side view of scope, cost, risk and delivery. For student accommodation, the proposed operational use and intended completion window should inform design and procurement decisions from the outset.

Questions
What is Josh’s Manchester development experience?
The Chapel is the published Manchester case study: a Grade II listed chapel restored to create 87 student beds opposite the University of Manchester. This work forms part of Josh’s earlier role at Empiric Student Property.
Can JMGL help assess a heritage conversion?
A development management brief can coordinate the commercial appraisal and the specialist planning, heritage and building-condition inputs needed to assess a conversion. A listed building needs scheme-specific advice; an earlier project does not establish what will be acceptable on another site.
Does JMGL have a Manchester office?
No Manchester office is advertised. JMGL’s office address is in London, with development management services available for Manchester schemes.
